Security & Surveillance (Wireless & Wired) Systems -- indoor/outdoor:

Whether you're home or away, Security & Surveillance systems will help to keep your home safe. In addition to alerting you at home for monitored conditions, all the systems we sell can remotely contact you via either phone/cell/Internet. Most systems can also be remotely controlled via either phone/cell/Internet.

Security Systems -- The main components of a Security system is a wireless or wired controller, with various wireless & wired sensors/devices attached to it. The types of sensors include door/window contact, glassbreak, motion, smoke, flood, humidity, indoor/outdoor temperature, power out, and more. Support for devices include Lighting, Thermostats, and Surveillance Cameras. Each Security system specializes in a given area and comes with a set of sensors and capabilities. They can be extended to work with other sensors and devices (purchased separately.) Remote contact/control is either built in, or can be purchased as an add-on.

Surveillance Systems -- The main components of a Surveillance system consists of a camera, a recorder, a viewer, and a transmission medium. Most Surveillance systems are web enabled, thus can be controlled remotely. Surveillance systems can be "stand-alone" systems, or they can be integrated with some of the Security systems. When selecting a surveillance camera, decide which options are desirable for your needs. Indoor and outdoor, wired and wireless cameras are available. Some offer pan/tilt/zoom control, even from a web-connected computer, while others will transmit to a receiver connected to your monitor, TV, or VCR.

Example of a Home Security/Surveillance System with Remote Control

The diagram below shows a remotely controllable security/surveillance system, using an INSTEON network, the GOLD standard of home automation technology. The heart of the system is a SmartLinc central Controller.
  • The left side of the diagram shows the monitored/controlled sensors and devices, namely, a Panasonic surveillance Camera, lights controlled by SwitchLinc Dimmers, a 7-day programmable Thermostat and a Window/Door sensor.
  • The SmartLinc central Controller also links up with your wired/wireless home computer network.
  • You can then program and control your INSTEON Security System from-home and away-from-home.

About Camera Specifications: Did you know?

Image Sensor

This device converts light into electrical signals, much like a microphone converts sound into electrical signals. Image sensors come in 2 flavors, namely, CMOS and CCD. CCD image sensors are better quality. Within CCD image sensors, a larger image sensor translates to a better picture. The best cameras come with at least a 1/2 inch CCD image sensor.

Lens

Lenses with wider angles (lower mm) will capture a larger area of images, ideal for full front and backyard view. However, for more accurate image capture, such as of business visitors or vehicle license plates, you may prefer a camera with a narrow (higher mm) lens that capture detail from a smaller area.

Resolution

The higher the number, the better the picture will be.

Illumination & LEDs

A camera's light sensitivity is measured in Lux: 1 Lux is the amount of light measured from 1 meter away. The lower the Lux rating, the less light the camera needs to capture clear images. If you'll be using a surveillance camera in an area that may receive no ambient lighting at night, select a camera with the lowest possible Lux rating (0). Look for cameras that have built-in IR illuminators that allow image capturing in total darkness. Some color cameras also switch automatically to black & white at night for clearer images.

About Camera Cables: Did you know?

For wired cameras, cable selection can be as important as camera selections. For runs under 200 feet, RG6 coax cable easily carries the video signal between the camera and monitor. For distances over 200 feet, use RG59 coax cable, still the ideal cable to carry low-frequency baseband video signals up to 1,500 feet. Be sure to use copper-braided RG59 coax rather than aluminum, which may distort the video signal over long runs. If you have unshielded twisted pair cable (data cable) installed in your home, you can take advantage of this inexpensive wiring, by connecting video baluns on each end.

Most cameras only have a few feet of cable emanating from it. For short connections you can use pre-made video patch cables. Two-conductor, 22-gauge shielded cable can also be used in short runs up to 35 feet.
