- Smart Heating & Cooling (HVAC), Environment Monitoring -- Not only can you adjust the temperature from anywhere in the house, you can control it from a cell phone, PC, or web-enabled hand-held device. It'll even notify you if the temperature gets too low or too high. You can also install wireless thermostats. Install a multi-zone controller and no more cold/hot bedrooms upstairs!
- Smart Lighting -- our most popular category and an excellent intoduction to home automation. Control and dim any light from any switch, in the same room or on different floors. Install a few more and control groups at a time with one touch. You can also control the lights via the Internet when you're away-from-home. For the ultimate in elegance, choose custom laser-etched Keypads, Paddles, and Wallplates, as well as multi-color LEDs.
- Smart Security & Surveillance -- Have your home call your cell phone if there is an alert (temperature, water leak, glass break, or any other trigger event.)
Keep an eye on the inside and outside of your house with wired & wireless surveillance Cameras. The security/surveillance systems can be monitored and controlled from home and away-from-home (via the Internet and/or telephone).
- Video & Audio Networking -- Video & Audio Networking refers to a centralized A/V system that distributes music and video signals throughout your home. Because the system is centralized, the only components required in each connected room are speakers and TV screens. The centralized components can be placed in your basement media room or in your electronic Control room. Once set up, you'll be able to control the entire system using a handheld remote in any connected room.
About Smart Home Automation Control: Did you know?
The following picture is an example of a Smart Home Automation network that is based on INSTEON technology (a combo of RF wireless and your home's electrical wiring -- INSTEON is also backward compatible with X10.) In this instance, it provides for:
- In-home and away-from-home Light Automation
- In-home and away-from-home Surveillance via an IP video Camera
- In-home and away-from-home Themostat control
Notes for the diagram above:
- In the center of the diagram, the 2 wall socket plug-ins are the Access Points (a.k.a. Bridges). The 2 Access Points are prerequisites for an INSTEON-based home automation network. Their purpose is two-fold, namely, 1) it "couples" the 2 phases of your home's electrical wiring, and 2) it "bridges" RF only devices -- such as the shown RF Handheld Remote and the Thermostat -- with the powerline only devices, such as Dimmers and Keypads.
- From a Keypad, shown in the lower-left corner, you can manually turn ON/OFF/Brighten/Dim any light and control any device in your house. For example, install one by your front door and link up to five individual lights or groups of lights, and you'll be able to see the on/off status of each light by looking at the Keypad. If you forgot to turn off your bedroom light on your way out in the morning, you could simply press the corresponding keypad button to turn it off without having to run all the way back to the bedroom.
- The RF wireless Thermostat provides the standard temperature control features of a high-end thermostat. In addition, you'll be able to save energy and money by 1) controlling the thermostat through the Internet, and 2) via an in-house INSTEON Keypad or hand-held Remote.
- The surveillance Camera has Web-based viewing along with remote pan and tilt functions, so that you can adjust your camera's angles from a computer or even a cell phone from another location.
- The Home Automation Controller (black box) with INSTEON PowerLinc Modem (to its right), allows you to configure and program all INSTEON Devices (lights, appliances, thermostats, security system, etc.), as well as X10 devices. You can set up timer events and custom event triggers, as well as monitor and control all the INSTEON-compatible devices in your home from any web-browser anywhere in the world! Now you can check if the lights in your house were left on and remotely control them from your computer at the office. You can also control, locally and remotely, the surveillance Camera and the Thermostat.
